One way to date ancient wood is with carbon dating. An instrument dealer comes to you with what he says is a violin made by the master violin maker Antonio Stradivari (1644–1737). You have a very small piece of wood from the violin analyzed, and the ratio of ¹⁴₆C/ ¹²₆C is found to be 96.4% of the ratio found in trees that were cut down in 1950. Could this violin have been made by Stradivari?
