Eugene Stansberry managed Air Wisconsin’s operations at the Kalamazoo Airport from 1999 until 2007, when he was terminated. His wife suffered from a rare autoimmune disorder throughout his employment period. Between February and May of 2007, Stansberry failed to notify corporate headquarters about six security violations received by his subordinates, and exchanged e-mails with his supervisor about his poor performance. Also during this same period, his wife’s health deteriorated, and Air Wisconsin’s health plan administrator informed him that it would no longer cover a treatment program that would improve her condition. In July 2007, Air Wisconsin fired Stansberry for poor performance, including his failure to stay within budget, failure to report security violations, and improper supervision of employees.
