The purpose of this problem is to explain what causes the dramatic white cloud pattern generated in the flow field over the F/A-18C Hornet shown on the cover of this book. This problem is both a tutorial and a quantitative calculation involving the reader. We first discuss some necessary thermodynamic background, followed by an examination of the physical nature of the flow field.
