The Blacksox Baseball Club and Roark Designs Corp conducted extensive negotiations concerning the development of a new ball park. During those negotiations, the owner of the Blacksox said to the owner of Roark, "Look, we both know that this stadium will eventually be built. The lawyers will have to work out the details, and of course nothing will be official until we sign a formal contract. But as far as I'm concerned, we might as well get started. I can promise you right now that if you draft the plans, we'll pay you $100 000 for your efforts." Roark spent a considerable amount of time and money preparing a blueprint for a new stadium. Unfortunately, the entire proposal collapsed when, through no fault of either the Blacksox or Roark, the local government denied zoning approval for the project. Roark nevertheless insists that the Blacksox abide by the promise made by their president. Will the doctrine of promissory estoppel assist Roark in that regard?
