British linguistics researcher Jack Grieve created maps of which swear words are most common across regions of the United States (Carey, 2015). Using data from billions of tweets worldwide, he had a computer count the frequency of a range of curse words, and documented the geographic patterns in which words were most popular. The “F word,” for example, is most common on the east and west coasts and in the south. The much milder “darn,” by contrast, is least common in those regions. For this example, state the variables, identify what type of variable each is, indicate which is the independent variable and which is the dependent variable, and note the appropriate statistical test.
