In addition to the VIX index based on S&P 500, there are VIX indexes available for some individual stocks. Go to the web site of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED) (fred.stlouisfed.org) and for the period from June 2010 to the present, download and plot on the same graph the data series for the VIX index (VIXCLS) and the VIX index for Apple’s stock (VXAPLCLS). Which of the two series is the more volatile? Would you expect the relationship between the two series to change during a recession? Briefly explain.
