Let's start talking about it, Sherly Sandberg helps us understand that it's okay to talk about gender
Question:
"Let's start talking about it", Sherly Sandberg helps us understand that it's okay to talk about gender issues with our teams, at school and at work, in our homes, and yes, even in our social circles with friends. What I found interesting is that she points out that women need to be okay with asking permission to have accommodations in the work environment in order to be empowered at work. Sheryl made this point with the example of Cynthia Hogan asking her husband if he would be home more and help with the family, while simultaneously asking united states VP Joe Biden if he would allow her to be home to have dinner with her family every night. I found this example very powerful, and as she says - it’s what every woman should feel empowered to do ... ask permission! But I also thought about men, and their need to ask permission to have the same accommodations without having it affect their careers. while Sheryl spoke of women not even asking permission because they assume the answer will be no, so they don't even consider taking jobs, I think men often times don't ask permission because they assume the answer will be no, and therefore they just keep working crazy hours and never give themselves the opportunity to be at home more with their wife and children.
What do you feel?
Is asking permission something you think will hold you back?
Do you think you're brave enough to ask permission?
Do you think this is still an issue in the workforce?
What experiences have you had already to share about this topic?
