When employees work different schedules, scheduling meetings and communicating about projects can be difficult (Petersen 2018). Over time, scheduling incompatibilities and lack of spontaneous communication can slow down projects and result in missed opportunities. Also, it is harder to manage team members if rarely meet in person (Bean 2015). This research shows that many managers of dispersed teams are struggling to get the basics right and develop a clear shared focus and team ethos.
For example: during the pandemic, Netflix is experiencing such an issue while they are working remotely. Neflix’s CEO stated that remote working does not even bring any positiveness but also causes some pure negative to them (Carly 2020). This is because it is challenging to gather and reach out their people (employees) that work from home, lack of real “connection”. Consequently, it will lead to difficulties for HR managers in managing and communicating with their employees, particularly their employees’ performance management. as managers could not know how hard and efficient their employees that work from home.
