A study was performed to assess whether hyperinsulinemia is an independent risk facto for ischemic heart disease. A group of 91 men who developed clinical manifestations of ischemic heart disease (IHD) over 5-year period were compared with 105 control men (matched with regard to age, obesity [BMI = kg/m2], cigarette smoking, and alcohol intake) who did not develop IHD over the period. The primary exposure variable of interest was level of fasting insulin at baseline. The data present are shown below (mean ± sd).
