Question:
A train of mass 1.8 x 10⁵ kg passes through a station travelling at 20 ms⁻¹ and accelerates at 0.2 ms⁻² for 2 minutes along a level track. From this position, the track slopes upwards at an angle of 5° and the train travels at a constant speed for a period of time. It then decelerates at 0.5 ms⁻² before stopping at the next station. The distance between the two stations is 9 km and there is a constant frictional force of 14 kN throughout the jourmey.
Calculate
(i) the distance travelled by the train while it is accelerating
(ii) the force applied by the engine while the train is accelerating
(iii) the force applied by the engine while the train is travelling at constant speed
(iv) the time taken for the train to travel between the stations
(acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 ms⁻²)
