Question:
Haffa is attending to her duties and has a requirement to empty the urinary drainage bag of one of her residents, Mr. Jimmy Cagney. Jimmy has a potentially infectious urinary tract infection which is under treatment. He has been prescribed antibiotics by his clinician. The clinician has also ordered that, until cleared, Jimmy's urine is collected and tested by urinalysis. The urine can be disposed of normally by emptying it into Jimmy's ensuite commode.
Jimmy is sitting in the lounge and Haffa invites him to go to his room so she can empty his urinary drainage bag. She has never done the procedure before and is a little nervous.
However, Jimmy says he is watching an important television show, and can he just go to the public toilet by the lounge where she can empty the bag. She refuses but does not know why.
Haffa persuades him to go to his room. She fetches the urine measuring jug from Jimmy's ensuite toilet. He is sitting in a chair next to his bed with his trousers rolled up and the urinary drainage bag attached to his left calf by its Velcro fasteners. He tells her she should fetch the bigger urine measuring jug belonging to Eddie Robinson, his friend, and fellow resident. She refuses but does not know why.
Before beginning the emptying of Jimmy's urinary drainage bag, Haffa excuses herself, goes out of the room, and telephones you on the DECT (internal mobile telephone) telephone. She has many questions for you.
a. Was it correct for Haffa to deny Jimmy's use of the public toilet? Explain your answer.
b. Was it correct for Haffa to refuse to use Mr. Eddie Robinson's urine measuring jug? Explain your answer.
c. What type of organism is most commonly responsible for urinary tract infection?
d. Using bullet points and a step-by step process, describe the procedure Haffa should follow to empty the urinary drainage bag. (Pay particular attention to describe how she follows all standard precautions including use of all appropriate personal protective equipment and the things she must do to minimise risk of transferring infection to other)
