The cage of a goods hoist has a total mass when loaded of 1200 kg. The rope passes over a drum at the top of the shaft and thence to a balancing mass of 500 kg. Cage and balance mass move on parallel guides and the force of friction in each line may be taken as the same and constant at 500 N. The drum has an effective diameter, between rope centres, of 1-5 m, a total mass, allowing for the rope, of 600 kg, and a radius of gyration of 0-6 m. The maximum acceleration attained is 1.5 m/s² which occurs at a speed of 2-5 m/s. The maximum speed is 4-5 m/s and retardation is at a uniform rate from that speed to zero in the last 4-5 m of travel. Determine: (a) the power required to drive the system at the condition of maximum acceleration, and (b) the rope tensions in both lines during retardation. (I. Mech. E.)
