Question:
You are an engineer at a metal company. You are a new employee and are eager to make a good impression to win your early promotion to senior junior engineer. You have to design the furnace wall of the metal producing section of the plant. Your task is to present an analysis of the production of a metal of your choice (eg, Al, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ag, Au) in a blast furnace so that the outside of the furnace is not too hot to the touch. You should simplify the analysis to analysing the plane conduction of heat through a wall, as was demonstrated in the classroom. A guideline of 55 degrees C can be used. Some things to consider: -The furnace wall needs to be made from an inner material that does not conduct heat very well (an insulator) You must have a minimum of three layers for the furnace wall. You could have more if you want. -The outside of the furnace wall must be Stainless Steel (there are different grades of stainless steel so you will have to decide on which type. -Your boss tells you that the required production of the metal that you will produce is 20 MT per month, 24 hour operation. -The furnace is to be rated at 4.5 kW -You must make an estimate of the profitability of the plant (eg. assume a certain number of employees). -Think of the fuel that you must use to fire the plant. This will be a cost as well. You will have to find an estimate for this. -You will need to make assumptions about aspects of the plant. You need to be very careful about what you do as this attention to detail is what employees look for in their juniors.
