Using a weekend’s football results from the Premier (or other) league, see if the number of goals per game can be adequately modelled by a Poisson process. First calculate the average number of goals per game for the whole league, then derive the distribution of goals per game using the Poisson distribution. Do the actual numbers of goals per game follow this distribution? You might want to take several weeks’ results to obtain more reliable results.
