The antibacterial agent in garlic, allicin, is synthesized from the unusual amino acid alliin by the action of the enzyme allinase. Because allinase is an extracellular enzyme, this process takes place only when garlic cells are crushed. Propose a reasonable synthesis for the amino acid alliin. (Begin by designing a synthesis of an amino acid from Table 26-1 that is structurally related to alliin.)
