Safety and health are often taken for granted until they are gone. Look for ways to help people in need. 

• Contact your local chapter of the Red Cross about ways you can help with their local activities or with disaster relief. You may be able to make and serve meals for local homeless or put “comfort kits” together for people who have experienced recent disasters.

• If you ’ re a little handy, contact a local organization such as Rebuilding Together that assists the elderly or disabled with winterizing their homes or projects that make their homes safer by installing hand rails on stairs or window locks.

As you put your service learning experience together, keep a journal of your activities, the time you spend, contact information for people you work with, and your thoughts about the process. When you ’re finished, make a presentation to your class about the experience, and what you learned. What concepts from Chapter 13 were you able to apply?
