Question:

Model compounds are often used to model iron– sulfur proteins. Comment on the applicability of the following models, and on the data given.

(a) [Fe(SPh)4]2− as a model for rubredoxin; observed values of μeff are 5.85 μB for the oxidized form of the model compound and 5.05 μB for the reduced form.

(b) [Fe2(m-S)2(SPh)4]2− as a model for the active site in spinach ferredoxin.

(c) Compound 29.31 as a model for part of the active sites in nitrogenase. The Mossbauer spectrum of 29.31 is consistent with equivalent Fe centres, each with an oxidation state of 2.67.
