To examine this question students were presented with the following case: Howard Roizen is a venture capitalist, former entrepreneur, and astute networker, is a power player in Silicon Valley, and has been good friends with Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Students are asked to evaluate Howard’s performance in terms of competence, effectiveness, and likeability then decide if they would like to employ him and work alongside him. The evaluations he gets from students are glowing. However when students are presented with exactly the same case but with the name changed from Howard to Heidi, the results are distinctly different. They do not judge the individual to be likeable and do not want to work with them.
Bohnet (2016), a behavioral economist who discusses the case, explains this result by arguing that what is celebrated as entrepreneurship, self-confidence, and vision in a man is perceived as arrogance in a woman.
