Re: Memorandum Requesting a Pay Increase for a Model Employee, Writing
Assignment IV
Date: September 26, 2013
An employee has been consistently on time for every scheduled shift for the past year.
You are the Assistant Director for a 250 seats call center. The employee, in addition to being on time for each scheduled shift, is a model worker. The employee fills in for other workers at a moment’s notice. He or she is able to do every job in the department. The employee’s cross training has saved the department time and money. The employee is friendly to customers and extremely helpful. You have received a large number of verbal praises from customers regarding this particular employee. The employee has made your job very easy and you appreciate thejob he or she has done. It is now time for the employee’s annual evaluation. In addition to the evaluation conducted by the employee’s immediate supervisor, you will write a letter to the Director of your department soliciting $1.50 per hour increase for the model employee. The employee currently earns $8.50. There is a challenge for you. If the raise is given, he or she will be the highest paid hourly employee in the department. He or she does not have the most seniority. Ten dollars per hour is the pay for entry-level supervisors. This disparity may cause resentment towards you and the hourly employee. It may even cause some complaints from current supervisors. Despite this possibility, you decide to write the letter anyway.
Justify to the Customer Care Director why the employee deserves the raise.
Write a memo (To, From, RE, Date) to the Director of your department and request a raise on behalf of the model employee. Write three strong paragraphs, including topic sentences. Do not exceed three paragraphs! Make the memo convincing. This is the fourth written assignment for the semester.
