Cross sectional areas of the parts AB and BD of the rod are 1000 mm² and 450 mm² respectively. The cross sectional area of the collar is 500 mm². The lengths of the parts are as indicated in the figure. The Young's modulus of steel is 200 GPa and the allowable stress in the steel rod and the collar is 500 MPa. Calculate the allowable load P and, the elongation of the steel rod ABD and the shortening of the collar at the allowable load.
