Question:
- All four officers involved in George Floyd's arrest have now been found guilty on various charges. Derek Chauvin (the man who kneeled on George Floyd's neck) was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to 21 years in prison. J. Alexander Kueng, who helped hold Mr. Floyd down, received a three year sentence, and Officer Tou Thao, who kept bystanders away, received three and a half. A federal judge sentenced the two former officers, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng, after a jury convicted them earlier this year of violating Mr. Floyd's rights by failing to provide medical aid and by failing to intervene as another officer, Derek Chauvin, pressed his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck. The fourth officer, Thomas Lane, 39, who helped to restrain Mr. Floyd by holding his legs, pleaded guilty both to a federal charge of violating Mr. Floyd's rights and to state charges of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. He, like J. Alexander Kueng, was a rookie officer at the time of Mr. Floyd's death. Last week, he received a federal sentence of two and a half years in prison.
- Do you agree with the ruling that found Dereck Chauin guilty, and do you think he would have been found guilty had the protests not occurred?
- How about the other officers? Do you think they deserve to spend time in prison?
