Question:
Since we're studying employee motivation this week, I thought we'd discuss how to inspire and retain different types of employees. For example, some employees are motivated by money while others are motivated by experiences or recognition. Employee segmentation, also called employee differentiation, is a tool that companies can use to better understand groups of workers.
For example, 3M created 8 clusters among 3500 high potential employees in a global workforce of 85,000. (SHRM). Four examples of 3M's employee clusters are "in it for my life", "in it to win it", "in it to experience it" and "in it as Alpine ascenders". Read more about 3M's example to understand why companies are segmenting employees and how it affects motivation.
Research other companies that are using employee segmentation. How are they approaching it? What have the results been so far? Does this work better in some industries than others and why? What about smaller organizations? Provide examples.
How does this approach to employee management relate to consumer marketing?
