Since we're studying employee motivation this week, I thought we'd discuss how to inspire and retain different types of employees. For example, some employees are motivated by money while others are motivated by experiences or recognition. Employee segmentation, also called employee differentiation, is a tool that companies can use to better understand groups of workers.

For example, 3M created 8 clusters among 3500 high potential employees in a global workforce of 85,000. (SHRM). Four examples of 3M's employee clusters are "in it for my life", "in it to win it", "in it to experience it" and "in it as Alpine ascenders".
