Case History: Shelby and Marcus: A Deadly Outcome Shelby was 20 years old and Marcus was 24 years old when they met. Marcus worked as a lineman for the local utility company and nearly every morning came to the restaurant where Shelby worked as a waitress during the breakfast shift. In fact, Shelby became his waitress; she'd start bringing a pot of coffee to his table and filling his cup when she saw him sauntering toward the front door from the parking lot. They flirted with each other, and-finally-Marcus asked her out. A whirlwind romance ensued, and in less than a year, they were engaged. Shelby moved into Marcus's small bungalow on the outskirts of town before the wedding. The first time Marcus had taken her to his home, she was shocked by his dcor; hanging on the walls of his living room were a variety of knives. Marcus was very proud of his collection of rare and exotic knives, but Shelby found them a little frightening. This was now the home she was going to share full-time with Marcus. Over time, Marcus became increasingly possessive of Shelby. He would accuse her of flirting with his friends or with other customers and, when she denied it, would get very angry and call her a liar and a slut, although later he would apologize and tell her he wouldn't get so upset if he didn't love her so much. He started to call her at work, and if she didn't answer the phone-usually because she was busy serving customershe would come to the restaurant to check up on her. | Shelby's boss warned her that Marcus was interfering with her ability to do her job well, and when Shelby told Marcus he needed to stop checking up on her at work, he argued that her boss was trying to break them up so he could have Shelby to himself. Marcus insisted Shelby quit her job, and although she didn't really want to, she complied, rationalizing that she would then have more time to plan their wedding. Following the wedding reception, which lasted until midnight, Shelby and Marcus drove two hours to their honeymoon destination. Marcus wanted to have sex, but Shelby, tired from the day's events and the long drive, told him she just wanted to go to sleep. Marcus flew into a rage, held Shelby down by her arms, and told her, "You're mine now. When I say I want sex, we're having sex. Marcus then forced Shelby to have sex. As their marriage continued, Marcus became increasingly controlling, imposing more rules on Shelby. If she disobeyed, or even complained, he would "punish" her with a slap, or by pulling her hair. He frequently called her names or made fun of her opinions or how she dressed. He told her to stop taking her birth control pills because he wanted a baby, but Shelby secretly continued to take them, thinking that she wanted their relationship to improve before she brought a child into it. During a routine check-up, Shelby's doctor told her she had a sexually transmitted infection (STI). She then realized that Marcus must be cheating on her, since she had not had sex outside their marriage. She dared not tell him about the STI, however, because she knew he would likely accuse her of infidelity. But Marcus grew more impatient as the months passed and Shelby did not get pregnant. He began to threaten her. For instance, he would make her sit with him while he cleaned his knives, mentioning how they could kill a person with just one quick swipe across the neck. He would add a comment about how husbands used to be able to kill their wives for not bearing them children. Just before her 23rd birthday, Marcus asked Shelby what her favorite color was; when she told him pink, he replied that for her birthday he was going to buy her a pink casket.
