China's insatiable appetite for raw materials has in recent years been fueling a boom in the Australian mining industry. Chinese companies are now developing their own vast mining projects throughout Australia in a race to secure billions of tons of mineral wealth, it's an industry that's making some people extremely rich but it's also left some remote communities facing a rather uncertain future. From the town of Cue in Western Australia the BBC Stephen Sackur has sent this report.

And here he is Clive Palmer already a billionaire thanks to his long term mining partnership with the Chinese. > >They're the people that have got the demand that need the resources. Australia's got the resources and you know other people also have the resources. Fortunately geographically we're closest.

>> Australia is enjoying a commodities boom this is Perth the country mining capital. There's plenty of new wealth here but Australia's status as China's quarry of choice isn't cost free. More than 400 miles inland from Perth the Weld range shimmers in the heat. Another Chinese company Sino Steel plans to dig 300 million tons of iron ore out of these hills. The Chinese chief executive wouldn't talk to us but a South African geologist did.

>> Well part of the hill is going to disappear because it's hosted within the hill but there are environmental considerations that come into play.

>> Its going to change this place forever.

>> Yep.

>> The Weld range is not empty land. It's the ancient home of the Wajarri Yamatji aboriginal people. Sino Steel says it will respect their heritage. Tribal elder Colin Hamlet is not so sure.

>> My worries are about specific areas that we don't want to touch and they keep wanting to do it. You know that's the worry.

>> These hills are littered with the archeological remains of thousands of years of aboriginal life but they also contain hundreds of millions of tons of iron ore and often money speaks louder than history and heritage. Within 20 years many of these hills will be dug up and their bounty shipped off to China. BBC News Stephen Sackur Western Australia.
