People have become addicted to shopping for clothes. Compared to past decades, new clothing is very cheap, but it is also of poor quality, which means that our trendy outfits are rapidly discarded. It is then so easy to go out and replace the discards with the latest fashions. It has been estimated that the average American discards about 81 pounds of clothing each year. The problem is that 85% of the clothes we throw away will end up as landfill. It is very difficult to recycle these garments because they are made of fabric blends; moreover, the discarded fabrics release chemicals into the soil and water. Thus, our "fast-fashion" habits end up being a huge contributor to environmen- tal pollution. People have become addicted to shopping for clothes.
