Question:
Part A) Ang Myat is a 32-year-old man who is originally from Myanmar and lived on the Thai-Burma border in a refugee camp since he was a teenager. He is accompanied by his friend Denpo for support. Denpo has experience of forced migration also but has been living in Australia longer than Ang and is more familiar with the systems and services available, and his English is at a level where he does not need an interpreter for most interactions. Denpo and his family have Sub class 200 visas. Ang arrived in Australia in 2013 by boat to seek asylum, planning to travel ahead of his wife and (then) two small children (now 12 and 13 years old) to try and secure a new life for them all, away from daily risk of violence and limited rights. It hasn't worked out like that due to his years in detention, and his family remain in a refugee camp on the Thai-Burma border. He has always been worried about them as their living conditions are very poor but until recently he has not been able to help them in any way due to his incarceration. Now he is in regular contact with them via messaging services and whilst their living conditions are not good, they are used to where they live and have support systems there.
Last year Ang was granted a Safe Haven Enterprise visa (SHEv) subclass visa 790 which has enabled him to live freely in the community and earn money, which he sends back to his family when he can and helps to improve their standard of life. However, his visa is for 5 years only and has limitations for family reunification, all of which Ang is unclear about, even though he is very relieved to be able to live freely. His visa does enable him to access Centrelink benefits and he receives Jobseeker payments, but he is confused about how he will get a job with his level of English language skills, and his time out of the job market due to being in detention - in Thailand he earnt money trading. He has not taken any English Language classes in Myanmar, Thailand or in Australia and has very limited English, and he finished his schooling at 15 years of age when his family fled from Myanmar, across the border into Thailand. Denpo helps interpret for Ang Myat in many situations, including this meeting.
Ang also has an old arm injury - a result of a brutal attack in Myanmar - which limits what he can do physically. Since he was released from detention, he's been living in a rundown rooming house in Footscray as a cost of $200 (inclusive of utilities) per week. After paying rent, and sending money back to his family, he has little left over for food, transport to help him with his interviews for work, or to see friends he has made in recent months, such as Denpo. He has also had some very upsetting recent interactions with a new resident who has verbally assaulted and vilified him, saying he is "a Vietnamese drug dealer". He is confused and scared by these recent interactions, and this is in part the reason he is seeking out your help. Denpo has also encouraged him to seek help with your organisation because he was helped in many ways, a few years back when he arrived in Australia. Ang's dream is to be reunited with his family and to bring them to Australia where they can live safely, together, but he has many other questions about how he can live safely and comfortably in Australia in the meantime, working hard, and connecting and contributing to his community here.
Denpo's role in the meeting is to support his friend Ang both through interpreting for him, and also providing him with moral support. Ang trusts Denpo and so may ask him for his advice during the meeting, and Denpo can give his views and provide useful insights into the Burmese community in Melbourne, but the settlement planning process is for Ang Myat.

Part B)
Scenario for the Monitoring phone call which occurred 1 week later with Ang Myat, with Denpo present for interpreting. Use this information to write up on the Settlement Plan any follow up actions that are required, to support Ang Myat.
A week after you first met Ang you called him to find out how discussions from the settlement planning meeting have been going: has he been able to make the appointments you planned together and also has he been able to explore some of the other community locations and resources you suggested to him?
Ang Myat tells you that he attended the Centrelink meeting two days ago which you had arranged, but Denpo couldn't attend with him. The Centrelink officer did not offer a Telephone Interpreter to assist with the meeting and Ang could not understand anything that was discussed over the 15-minute meeting. He tells you that he is now very anxious and fearful that the Centrelink Officer may have changed something on his files about his situation without his knowledge and that this may impact his visa requirements.
Ang also tells you during this phone call that his housing situation has not been resolved and he does not know what to do about it. He is highly distressed about both of these events.
