Select College specialises in offering IGCSE and IB courses for students over 16 years old. The college is expanding rapidly. The deputy principal has responsibility for human resource manage- ment including recruitment. She has identified that the college will need three more administration workers and ten more lecturers. The lecturers are needed to set up the science and geog- raphy departments. The office workers are required to cope with the enrolment of the increasing numbers of students. The type of employment contracts to be offered to these new workers needs to be decided. The principal is keen to see costs kept as low as possible. He is paid a share of the college profits each year. He believes that part-time and temporary contracts should be given to the office workers. The lecturers, he believes, should be offered full-time, temporary contracts. This would allow the college to let staff go at the end of the year if either they were poor performers or student numbers were lower than antic- ipated. "We should pay a specialist recruitment agency to recruit and select all of the college's new staff. We would only need their services for about six weeks each year and we would not have to do any of the interviews,' he told the deputy principal. However, she does not believe this proposal will work and responded to the principal, 'It would seem unfair to these new office workers and teachers if we offered them shorter-term contracts than our existing staff. Also, there is a national shortage of good science teachers and we need to motivate and keep good staff. We should also have full control over how new teachers are recruited and selected - we have to work with them, after all.
