Statistics are often employed to argue a point. Later in this course we will examine how statistics can be used to make sense of the world accurately, but also how they can be incorrectly applied. Consider the following two arguments employing statistical information, and decide if you think the argument is valid. (1) In a survey of terrorist acts that took place over the past five years, approximately 1000 acts of terrorism were identified. 90% of these acts of terrorism were perpetuated by an individual of Muslim faith. We should therefore restrict immigration from Muslim countries because 90% of those immigrants will be terrorists.
