Question:
The Hate U Give is a challenging book in that it grapples with the politically charged issue of police shootings of black young men and the Black Lives Matter movement. Angie Thomas tries to bring empathy to such a scenario by exploring the lives of the characters that might be involved in such a situation. Over the course the semester, as we examine the idea of engaging in argument and social debate with empathy, I would like you to read The Hate U Give and record your own thoughts, impressions, feelings, struggles with the text. Only you and I will be able to see these entries, so I encourage you to freely express yourself. Do aspects of the text make you uncomfortable? Why might that be? Do you feel empathy toward any of the characters? Why? Does your view of any of the characters change and evolve as you read? What different points of view do you notice coming up in the book? Think about these kinds of questions as you write each post.
