Question:
There is a variety and background of prison programs are presented. There is much discussion regarding the importance of prison programs in terms of their cost and potential to undermine the punitive and deterrent aspects of a prison sentence. Yet prison programs reduce idleness, teach inmates to live and work in groups, open staff-inmate channels of communication, increase the confidence and self-esteem of offenders, encourage them to accept challenges and strive for success, and increase the educational and vocational skills of inmates.
On the flip side, some want to educate while others want to continue along the path in the use of capital punishment. The Furman v. Georgia created general guidelines that must be followed for capital punishment statutes to be considered constitutional. Additionally, proponents usually cite the value of capital punishment as a deterrent and provide the need for retribution, protection of society from further crimes. Recent uses of DNA evidence have led to the exoneration and release of several inmates previously found guilty of murder and sentenced to death.
