We have talked about the importance of getting to know people in the community in order to build relationships and trust with police. When police are on a call for service (threats complaint, suspicious person, stolen property, etc.) they have a unique chance to build relationships and trust with the community. When police are not actively on a call for service, it typically falls on them what they do with that time (This could be typing a report, talking with other officers, looking at their phones, interacting with citizens (on their own)). My question to you is if interactions (that are not related to a criminal matter) are so important what steps could a chief or sheriff take to promote or mandate these interactions take place? What would you recommend and what are the pros and cons of mandating an action versus promoting it? Explain.
