Your assignment this week is to do some research on current legislation on policies that support families
Question:
Your assignment this week is to do some research on current legislation on policies that support families either local or that are being debated at the federal level. An example is this plan released by the President of the United States in 2021. (Links to an external site.) Read up on one of the bills that is being debated, the draft a letter to your government representative in support of (or against if you chose) the legislation using the readings and course materials from Module 3 as SUPPORT for your argument. You can select legislation that is local, state, or federal. You can select something outside of the area you live in if you'd like. Please select something that was passed in 2021 or is currently being debated. Remember to argue with fact, not opinion, and be respectful.
Things to address in your response
- Who benefits from this legislation?
- How will children benefit from the proposed legislation?
- How might a person's race, class or gender impact inequalities in this policy in this country (ie, in the USA FLMA is unpaid unless a person has accrued vacation or sick time to use. This creates a disadvantage for the working poor that often don't get benefits and can't afford to take unpaid leave).
- Are people with relatively little power (think about the intersectionality quiz) being considered?
- You MUST relate your post/letter to the content you read this week and incorporate content as evidence. If you do not, you will not receive any credit for your original post. Use what you've read/watched in this course this week as support for your argument.
- Your audience for this post is a legislator. Write it with that in mind. You don't need to address a specific person for this assignment, you can just say, "Dear Congressperson" if you'd like.
