- Application and Analysis:
+ Mental health: In many Asian American households, the topic of mental health is overlooked. Some parents do not understand the toll that mental health can bring to their children. It is a burden that is left ignored and untreated because of negligence. This concept socially and culturally reveals that families who pressure their children to be at a certain level, where it is academically, behaviorally, socially, etc., are oftentimes struggling with mental health. I believe that this concept is important for everyone and not just for Asian Americans, mental health is something that relates to our psychological and emotional well-being. This is important because we have to take care of ourselves not just physically but also mentally and emotionally. Since Covid, I think that many people are struggling with their mental health. Covid has restricted us from going outside and being able to interact with people. This has caused my mental health to plummet. I was severely that I could not physically interact with people and I can picture a handful of people who feel the same. This concept can be used to help better understand different types of mental health.
+ Trauma: Understanding the concept, of trauma, is very important as it relates to the previous concept. In Tang and Kao's paper, they mentioned how intergenerational conflict can manifest and lead to different things. From what I understand, I believe that intergenerational conflict can be seen as some sort of trauma. Because this conflict happened, trauma will follow afterward. One thing that came to mind is the recent Asian American hate crimes. I have seen many news reports and articles recalling stories of white people committing violent acts against Asian Americans. There is some sort of intergenerational trauma. White people are always oppressing a group of people. They project anger and violence instead of being civil. This intergenerational conflict started way back when whites oppressed Native Americans, Africans, then African Americans, Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, and Mexican Americans, and the list goes on and on. This recurring tragedy is based on the idea of white supremacy which is passed down from generation to generation. This causes other groups trauma. Native Americans had their land stolen and their people killed. African/African Americans were slaves for years. During the Gold Rush, Chinese Americans were discriminated against. Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps. All of this suffering yet nothing to ease it mentally. This concept historically reveals that trauma can be created and passed down. This concept helps us better understand mental health.
- Reflections:
+ Mental health: My parents do not like when I express my feelings. They get upset when I cry. They get upset when I express anger. They get upset when I display clear signs of boredom. My parents don't like when I cry because I should be strong. However, isn't a sign of strength to be able to express your feelings and emotions. Because I am an Asian girl, they think that I should be happy and giggly. I must be docile. When I maintain a straight face, they tell me to smile because I am making other people uncomfortable, but why should I fake a smile and why do they care so much about what other people think? Moreover, because of this, I feel like I cannot express my emotions the way I want to. This is a heavy burden on my mental health. I feel like I can't be myself around my family. However, as we spend more time together during COVID-19, our conversations regarding this topic have been fruitful and I hope that my parents understand that emotions are not a weakness and that reputation isn't everything.
+ Trauma: The only trauma I remember experiencing was getting harassed and assaulted. I have been catcalled and groped. It is disgusting how some people think that this is okay. Moreover, Ido get scared when a stranger gets too close to me when I go to public places. I do tense up when I see men eyeballing me. I try my best to always be with other people and walk in pairs or groups. However, other than that I am comfortable with people I know and when I do meet new people I keep a distance between them until I feel like I trust them.
