The potential impact of rater error on worker performance and organizational performance is vital to growth and development. Rater error can negatively impact the accuracy of performance and nullify their validity, which can skew employee rating too high or too low (SpriggHR, 2020). If you rate everyone too high or too low, you are not using performance appraisals effectively. People use performance appraisals to help improve in areas they score low in, no one is perfect, and we all have something to work on. There can be different ways to approach performance appraisals. You can have the employee self-evaluate, If the employee is being honest, they will know what areas need improvement and what they do well at. Constructive feedback is important, I like to know if I am not doing something accurately because I cannot change if no one ever says anything. Applying numerical ratings is another good way to show if they need improvement, meeting expectations, or exceeding expectations. Each employee always has something they can work on to improve for future growth and development.
One example you can practice is to have a notebook with notes of what someone has done well, list areas they could improve. This will help ensure when it comes to the time to review you have notes to refer to too, and the performance appraisal will be more accurate. Another example would be to refresh your internal standards prior to doing performance appraisals. Each role has similar but different essential functions, so review each one prior to the appraisal process. This will help ensure reduce the rater error and ensure not rater bias is occurring.
