Question:
Topic- Grand proposal
It is well known that the growing elderly population has been a concern from many healthcare leaders in Canada and worldwide. The reason is people are living longer but the quality of life does not follow this increase. As a result, older adults have chronic diseases such as diabetes, and hypertension. These are risk factors for developing cardiovascular problems (stroke and heart failure) as well as cognitive impairment . As a result, older adults become dependent on someone to support them in performing their activities of daily life such as bathing, dressing, taking medication, changing diapers, and mobility.
Their levels of dependencies may vary according to their needs and functional capacity. Some of them need specialized care such as nursing homes or long term institutions. However, those services are operating in a full capacity and the healthcare services are overwhelmed. In addition, there is a lack of human physical resources to address their needs adequately. Furthermore, some seniors can not afford to have assistance in those kinds of services. Thus, their families are the main caregivers who provide support to them at home.
In this sense, healthcare professionals are crucial to provide adequate orientation and educate seniors' families to address their needs and improve their knowledge about the proper care of their loved ones. They play a fundamental role at primary, secondary and tertiary level of services. For instance, healthcare providers have the opportunity to educate senior patients and their families at primary care services, home care, long-term care, nursing homes, and hospitals.
