BOX 7.1 Examples of Warnings from Scientists about Ecological Degradation 1992 statement of the Union of Concerned Scientists [2]: We the undersigned, senior members of the world's scientific community, hereby warn all humanity of what lies ahead. A great change in our stewardship of the Earth and the life on it is required if vast human misery is to be avoided and our global home on this planet is not to be irretrievably mutilated. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, a group of over 1000 scientists, issued a similar warning in 2005 [3]: At the heart of this assessment is a stark warning. Human activity is putting such a strain on the natural functions of the Earth that the ability of the planet's ecosystems to sustain future generations can no longer be taken for granted. The Fifth Assessment Synthesis Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change made the following statements in 2014 [4]:
