Is Homework a Punishment for High school Students?

For many years, the benefits of homework have long been debated.  For some people, homework is seen as a beneficial necessity, while other people view homework as an unnecessary punishment.  Recently, people have begun having a more positive view of homework, and all of the benefits it bestows upon students in the long run.  Read on to discover why homework serves as a treasure trove of useful life skills, rather than a form of punishment.

Develop Time Management Skills

Time management skills are necessary to thrive in the classroom and workplace. Homework promotes time management skills because students set up a certain time frame, in which to study, and accomplish everything that needs to be done in that time segment.  As students go about doing their homework, they will naturally better grasp and develop skills that are necessary to manage their time, because they begin to estimate how long assignments will take to complete, based on experience.  Developing structure and routine helps students deal with varying tasks and calculating the amount of time needed to spend on each particular task or assignment.  In turn, they will be able to better manage their time and plan their agendas.

Promotes a Sense of Responsibility

Homework promotes a keen sense of responsibility because students have to be responsible enough to finish assignments.  Having sustained effort and attention span to work through an assignment, while learning and retaining the information at hand, demonstrates responsibility.   Being responsible is a pertinent life skill to have, as one day, students will be out in the workplace where assignments and tasks are given out on a daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly basis.

Learn Perseverance

Perseverance has always been a trait of successful people.  Homework teaches students to be perseverant because no matter how difficult or time consuming an assignment is, a student must finish it.  Being able to complete an assignment from start to finish, pushes students to strive to complete an assignment because it is due and their grade depends on it.  Homework teaches students to never give up, until the assignment is done or until they have taken away all that they can learn from the assignment or lesson.

 Build a Positive Self-Esteem

Completing homework assignments helps build a positive self-esteem in students of all ages.  By working through and understanding homework assignments, students gain a more positive self-image, and, in turn, a more positive self-esteem because they are truly understanding what they are working on, and ultimately, completing the assignment.  Feeling that they are producing a document or project worth sharing or turning in, is a great sense of accomplishment.

Enhance Academic Benefits

Homework also enhances academic benefits.  While doing homework, students are studying, learning, and, ultimately, finishing assignments.  Another way to enhance homework time and learning is by hiring a tutor and using a tutoring service, such as SolutionInn.  A major turn off from homework, is not having the teacher or professor available to answer questions or provide feedback.  This is where tutoring services come in handy, because students can receive immediate help or answers that are much needed.

Hopefully, after reading this article, you too have come to see and appreciate the benefits of homework.  It’s easy to understand why homework is sometimes viewed as a necessary evil, aka, punishment; but, think of all the things you have already learned, thanks to homework assignments.
