Operating systems have suitably and rapidly evolved over the years from serial processing operating systems to today's robust multiprogramming, time-sharing and real-time operating systems

(i). Discuss, in detail, reasons why an operating system is considered as a resource manager; and explain how it manages the various resources in the context of computer-based information systems in use at a tertiary institution.

(ii). Compare and contrast (α). serial processing operating systems and (β). simple batch processing operating systems; and explain practical limitations for their use, giving appropriate examples to illustrate your answer.

(iii). Discuss the reasons why you consider modern (time-sharing, multi-programming, and real time) operating systems to be better, more robust and more efficient than those in (ii) above. 

(iv). Examine three reasons why do you agree or disagree with the notion that "Modern operating systems still have more room for improvement". Justify your answer with practical examples.
