A fundamental idea behind programs such as Six Sigma is to follow Taguchi's second principle and minimize variability around the target for all critical dimensions. While achieving Six Sigma capability achieves good quality, the specifications remain in tact. Using Taguchi's loss function as a guide make an argument for tightening specification limits as variability is reduced as an alternative to aspiring to achieve Six Sigma quality.
