Question:
Certain conditions play roles in producing a particular desired result. Sometimes conditions can be described as sufficient. Sometimes a condition is said to be necessary. If a list of conditions is so complete that achieving all of them will always produce the desired result, then the list collectively constitutes "sufficient conditions." If failure to achieve one particular condition will always make the desired result impossible, regardless of achieving the other conditions, then that one condition is called a "necessary condition." In the design of a good balanced scorecard, do excellent growth and learning, excellent internal business processes, and excellent customer relationships constitute a list of sufficient conditions for sustaining financial success, or do they represent necessary conditions for sustaining financial success?
