In July 1998, Nadia Kanjii died in a skydiving accident just outside Calgary. A judge who conducted a 2005 inquiry into Ms. Kanjii’s death recommended national skydiving regulations to prevent such accidents in the future. In response, the federal government announced in 2008 that it would move to enhance safety standards in relation to instruction certifications and the training of student parachutists. This would include applying a mandatory set of safety standards in the industry. Tim Grech, president of the Canadian Sport Parachuting Association, is opposed to the measures. “The government would be starting to regulate something they know nothing about,” he stated. “It would literally handcuff us as far as our ability to change, to promote safety.” Do you agree with Mr. Grech’s assessment?
