In many of the preceding examples, confidence intervals are used toward the ultimate goal of estimating the value of a population parameter. Confidence intervals can also be used as a data-exploration tool, for describing and comparing data sets. Consider the following descriptive statistics, taken from two samples:
Men: n = 100  = 1.747 m s = 0.0744 m
Women: n =100  = 1.610 m s = 0.0620 m
Construct the confidence intervals for the estimates of the population mean of each group. Do the intervals overlap? Based on your answer to the preceding question, would you conclude that the populations of men's and of women's heights are likely to be the same or different? Explain.
