Social enterprise data made available in 2016 found that in all industry areas there were at least 20,000 operating social enterprises.  The social enterprise sector today continues to expand with an ongoing flow of organisations entering the sector (one-third of sampled organisations  were five years old or less), joining the ‘many mature and diverse organisations’ already present (Coggan 2020). ‘The sector now has the backing of philanthropists, impact investors, and government (to an extent) and Social Traders estimates there are 20,000 social enterprises in Australia generating up to 3 per cent of GDP and employing 300,000 Australians’ (Coggan, 2020).
