On April 20 2010, an oil rig leased by oil giant BP exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers and releasing approximately 200 million gallons of oil, tens of millions of gallons of natural gas and 1.8 million gallons of chemicals The ecological, economic and human impacts of this oil spill have been devastating and widespread throughout the Gulf of Mexico (more specifically in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida).

Among the obvious impacts have been those on: commercial fishing; recreational fishing; tourism; coral formation;

turtles, birds and other endangered and threatened species of wildlife and their habitats; human health; and property values along the coastal areas.
