A waste gas of total inlet flow rate 10.0 lbmole/ft 2 · h containing 0.050 moles solute

Question:

A waste gas of total inlet flow rate 10.0 lbmole/ft2· h containing 0.050 moles solute A/mole carrier gas is treated counter currently in packed tower with a nonvolatile, solute- free absorbing oil in order to scrub out 80% of solute A from the gas. It is desired to operate the process at a solvent flow rate 40% above the minimum solvent flow rate. Equilibrium mole ratio distribution data at the temperature and pressure of operation are provided below.

a. Provide a plot YA vs. XA for equilibrium line and the operating lines at the minimum solvent flow rate, and 1.4 times the minimum solvent flow rate.

b. Determine the minimum solvent flow rate (Ls,min) and the maximum possible mole ratio in solute A in the outlet liquid.

c. Repeat parts (a)-(b) for co-current flow.

Equilibrium distribution data for solute A in the solvent, as mole ratios:0.02 0.12 XA 0.04 0.06 0.08 0.10 0.0075 YA 0.0130 0.0180 0.0230 0.027 0.0305 0.180 0.0385 XA 0.140 0.160 0.200 0.220 0.2
