GIVEN > ΔΑΒC PROVE (1) AB + BC > AC (2) AC + BC> AB (3) AB + AC > BC Plan for Proof One side, say BC, is longer than or at least as long as each of the other sides. Then (1) and (2) are true. To prove (3), extend AC to D so that AB = AD and use Theorem 5.11 to show that DC> BC.
