In a pattern sometimes referred to as the 'golden handcuffs', people are drawn to fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) work by the large salaries on offer, but studies show that depression rates are twice as high among FIFO workers as among the general population. There have been cases of FIFO workers committing suicide. Is it ethical to employ FIFO workers? What can HR do to prevent or reduce mental health problems for them?
