The four most famous generals during the American Civil War were Ulysses S. Grant, William  Tecumseh Sherman, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. Historians have always debated who  the greatest general from among these four was. Following are the pairwise comparisons for five  criteria that might be used to evaluate the generals: leadership, including interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with others and delegate responsibility; tactical and technical skills  in planning and directing their armies, including the efficient use of their resources; their direct  impact on the battles they were involved in; their decision-making skills both between and during  battles; and their overall success in the war.
