In a debate in the 1976 U.S. presidential campaign, candidate Jimmy Carter argued, “While it is true that much of the recent rise in employment is due to the entrance of married women and teenagers into the labor force, this influx of people into the labor force is itself a sign of economic decay. The reason these people are now seeking work is because the primary breadwinner in the family is out of work and extra workers are needed to maintain the family income.” Comment.
