Mercy Ships (mercyships.org) deploys hospital ships to combat several overwhelming statistics. The first statistic is that over 5 billion people lack access to safe surgery. The second key stats is over 50 percent of the world’s population lives near a coast, so Mercy Ships are the best way to reach them with state-of-the-art medical care. Typical surgeries include cleft lips and palates, facial tumors, dental surgery, sight corrections, and clubfoot and orthopedic surgeries. Ship crews, nurses, and medical professionals volunteer their time to help children and adults from their devastating medical conditions. Two private hospital ships in their fleet are the Global Mercy and the Africa Mercy (see picture below).
